Horse Riding Lessons for Children

At Lavant Equestrian, we’re passionate about giving children the very best start in horse riding. Our structured weekly lessons, kind ponies and experienced, child-focused instructors create a safe, nurturing environment where every rider can grow in confidence and ability.

Children can start to learn to ride as soon as they can sit up on their own. We would recommend our Woodland Walks for toddlers and pre-schoolers so they can experience the joy of horse riding and our group lessons are from 4 years of age. Aside from being lots of fun, horse riding helps children develop social skills, builds responsibility and promotes fitness and emotional wellbeing.

Group Lessons

Weekly group lessons are the best way for children to learn how to ride safely and competently. We provide a safe environment for your child to learn in, along with experienced and qualified instructors who have a natural empathy with children.

With no more than six riders in each group, sharing the lesson with the same riders and having the same coach each week, your child will make huge progress, become a skilled and confident rider as well as making new friendships amongst their like-minded peers.

Your child will be riding a wide range of ponies to help develop their horse riding skills. Each pony has its special personality, movement and ability to encourage your progression. Some ponies are slower, some are speedier, some are easy and some are more challenging. Each pony will develop your horse riding in different ways and your child will need to be able to ride each one before moving up to the next level.

Our weekly child group lessons are graded from level 1 – 8 so that your child continues to progress and always has something to work towards. Once a level is completed your child is awarded with a gorgeous Lavant Equestrian rosette and certificate to congratulate them for all of their hard work.

It all starts with an introductory ride, where we will assess your child’s skills and carefully match them with the right pony to ensure a safe and positive start to horse riding.

We know that choosing where your child learns to horse ride is an important decision.

Our experienced team is happy to answer questions, explain how we prioritise safety and show you exactly why parents trust us to provide the very best start for every young rider.

You’re also very welcome to pop in and see us, we’d be delighted to show you around and introduce you to our team and horses.

"Week after week the instructors have poured in their knowledge, skills and disciplines ... enabling Hope to grow in confidence and become a lovely rider. It has been a privilege and pleasure to watch."

Caroline Prosser

"My daughter loves riding at Lavant Equestrian ... It is so much more than a 'riding lesson' for her, more of a chance to connect with nature and enjoy a moment of calm in a busy world. It really is the highlight of her week."

Jane Meechan

"Our son has been riding here for around 4 years ... this is the best experience we have had with any riding schools. The coaches are all very professional and can adapt their teaching style to suit students’ needs."

Home Schooled Children

Horse riding can play a valuable role in a well-rounded education, developing focus, discipline, physical coordination and responsibility, while encouraging time outdoors and connection with animals.

At Lavant Equestrian, we’re delighted to welcome home schooled children of all ages during term time. We offer bespoke arrangements to suit individual learning goals, from private and semi-private lessons to small group sessions that can include stable management and horse care.

Our experienced instructors work closely with families to design sessions that complement each child’s broader curriculum; combining practical skills, physical activity and personal growth in a safe, professional environment.
