Sustainability

At Lavant Equestrian, sustainability isn’t a new initiative, it has been part of our ethos from the very beginning. Since 1998, we’ve been mindful of how we care for our horses, manage our land and support the wider environment.

Caring for Our Horses, Our Land and Our Future

Set within the picturesque South Downs National Park, we’re privileged to work in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country, and we take that responsibility very seriously.

Every decision we make, from pasture management to energy use, supports a more resilient, balanced and biodiverse environment for the future.

Our approach is practical, proactive and always evolving. Working with leading equine agronomists, we’re moving towards organic land management, planting native trees and hedgerows, improving grazing quality and increasing biodiversity across our 80-acre site.

Because when the land thrives, so do our horses and the people who ride them.

Land Management and Grazing

Our pastures are central to the health and happiness of our horses. With expert guidance of a top equine agronomist, we’re transitioning to organic land management, ensuring our soil remains nutrient-rich and our grasslands stay healthy year-round.

As weather patterns change, hotter and drier summers are becoming the norm, we’re adapting by introducing stronger, drought-tolerant grass species, ensuring consistent year round grazing for our horses. These improvements benefit not just our horses, but also the wildlife that shares our land.

Supporting Wildlife and Biodiversity

We’ve planted more than two miles of hawthorn hedging, which is great for wildlife, while also providing a stock-proof barrier and valuable shelter from sun and rain for the horses. Our planting plans have always been designed with wildlife in mind, and as a result we’re seeing not just an increase in numbers but a wider range of species on site.

So far, we’ve planted over 150 trees of mixed native species, with more to come. Each addition strengthening our ecosystem and encouraging more insects, birds (including birds of prey), and small mammals to make their home here.

Energy and Resource Efficiency

Our sustainability plan also looks to the future. We’re working towards introducing solar energy and groundwater sourcing, allowing us to reduce reliance on traditional utilities while making better use of natural resources already available on site.

Small, consistent changes across the yard, from recycling systems to responsible waste management, all contribute to reducing our environmental footprint.

In fact, the entire Lavant Equestrian site produces just one bag of rubbish per week, a reflection of our careful resource use and our commitment to reuse and recycling wherever possible. Not many businesses could say the same.

"It is so much more than a 'riding lesson' for her, more of a chance to connect with nature and enjoy a moment of calm in a busy world. It really is the highlight of her week and as a family we realise how important it is for her."

Jane Meechan

"Thank you so much for the endless fun and enjoyment riding at your stables has given me. I cannot believe it has been 10 years since I began riding here and I have loved every minute of it."

Katie Johnson

A Living Landscape

Sustainability for us isn’t a project with an end date, it’s a commitment that evolves with the land. Every hedge, field and tree contributes to a thriving environment that supports horses, people and wildlife together.

Our goal is simple: to leave the land stronger, healthier and more biodiverse than we found it.
